Mbila, a girl, born February 2020 and rescued at 5 months old in an incredible double-rescue with Zongo from between the Kafue Flats and Kafue National Park.
The large heard became disorientated upon entering a densely populated area, were scarred off and scattered, leaving behind two tiny calves roughly 1 kilometre apart, Mbila and Zongo.
She was found beside a pool of water and named Mbila meaning “to swim underwater” in the local language Chinyanja.
She has a short, crooked tail and is calm and friendly to all the younger orphans, taking on the role of mini “matriarch”.
In September 2023 she and Zongo were old enough to be transferred to the Kafue Release Facility and begin their first steps back into the wild, and into Kafue National Park where they were born.
