A selection of some of the rarest butterflies and bees to be found in Devon.
Shrill Carder Bee. - very rare, only found in a few places in Devon.
Brown Banded Carder Bee - very rare, due to habitat loss.
White Admiral - found only in southern England woodlands.
Purple Admiral - very elusive but a few have been found in oak woodlands in southern England.
Large Tortoiseshell - Extinct in Britain during the post war but a few have been seen in Devon recently.
Dark Green Fritillary - this butterfly has been in decline since the 1970’s
Marsh Fritillary - In decline but is more frequent in the south of England. Loves a marshy habitat as its name suggests.
